It has been a slow movement for the Ceramic Tiles in terms of adding new product categories.
Most companies globally were really focusing of evolving better designs and playing with
surface textures and so also was the scenario in India. But the spate of events in the last
5 years has been totally mind-boggling for this industry locally as well as internationally.
|
New surface textures are being evolved
Over the years many Indian manufacturers have perfected the art of playing with surface
textures. Most of the manufacturers in India today have with them at least 5 to 7 different
available surface textures in their portfolios that they market. This is far different with
what was present a decade ago, where they used to play with only white color tiles with
little or no designs. Today, designs heavy in Lusters and/ or a combination of Luster with
Satin Matt effects are almost common. As an example, in a market such as Mumbai
(the Business Hub of the country) at any point of time you will find on an
average more than 35,000 designs present, and this is putting only the organized market
in perspective. Many new surface textures like Rusticos, Satin Matt, etc. are starting to
grab the attention of builders, architects and householders alike and they are asking for
more., which suggests that they are bored with the effects that were present in the past
and they wanted something new.

'Natural' look is in
Another feature of recent trends is that with better surface effects the market has now gone
'Natural'. The trend to be closer to the environment is in. They want these new effects with
Natural stone designs. Ceramic tiles with natural stone designs have become a hit in this
most diversified and densely populated country in the World. Most Indian manufacturers of
ceramic tiles are launching designs closer and similar to Italian Marble or Indian Marble or
Granite continuously. New natural stone effects on Ceramic tiles like Rusticos & Cobblestone
are also fast catching attention of the audiences. And rightly so, since internationally
Rusticos effect has become a rave. Most of these overseas players today market only these
effects. It is just a matter of time when these effects (Rusticos, Cobblestone, etc) become
a best seller in this country too, which is presently dominated by Marble & Granite designs.
|
Repetition is boring
This could also explain the craze for 'Natural' look. A natural design does not repeat
itself on a single surface. Audiences want designs that break the monotony. It for this
reason that most Interior designers are recommending concept tiles. Concept tiles are designs
made using a combination of two or more tiles. The entire set together form a complete design.
Most modern houses are nowadays opting for such designs. Single design tiles will soon loose
out to these concept-based designs.

Shift towards large format tiles
Up-to about 2 years back, the growth in the ceramic tiles industry was pre-dominantly because
of the growth of the wall tiles segment, with little contribution from floor tiles. But today
that does not seem to be the case; the floor tiles segment has bounced back and has now taken
the lead. The reason has been mainly due to the introduction of large format tiles. The
conventional 12"x12" floor tiles are loosing out to the 18"x18" & 24"x24" sized tiles.
Since the recent trends have shown the move towards hygiene-based products, Health &
Hygiene have become of prime importance. It is for this reason that these large format tiles
are gaining in acceptance. These tiles reduce the number of gaps that are created by installing
the conventional floor tiles. This trend will continue with even larger sizes coming into the
picture.

Vitrified & Porcelain tiles - tiles of the future
Perhaps, no other feature has had such an impact as the one created by these two categories
of products. Vitrified tiles are products that possess water absorption below 0.05% and
Porcelain tiles are products that possess water absorption below 0.5%. These products will
transform the future of ceramic tile industry. These categories of products already account
for 13% of the overall turnover of the ceramic tile industry in India. They are finding wide
acceptance because of their inherent qualities and features. They come in Natural designs
(Marble, Granite, etc), are polished, can be laid joint-free, are easy to maintain
and pre-sized & ready to lay products. These features are far superior to the existing
features provided by ordinary ceramic tiles.
If these trends are anything to go by, the future seems very interesting for the manufacturers
of these products. Consumers can expect more surprises and better products in the coming
future.
